THE EARTHSHOT INSTITUTE
Earthshot is based on the 1960s Moonshot, which inspired and motivated the industry and people, on the quest to reach the moon. It catalysed technological innovation and is a milestone for human civilisation. The Earthshot is also about hope, about reversing the degradation caused by human activity, and fighting for a better future.
The scheme aims to create a dialogue between various research groups, to enhance the pace of research into sustainable technologies; as well as providing a public platform where others can engage with the advancements. It aims to be both a research and education institute, and an example of what the future of cities could be, by integrating an energy regeneration plant. This will be open to the public, giving them a glimpse into the unseen infrastructure of cities.
Located in Holborn, central London, it adds a new layer of infrastructure- a district heating network- to an already rich historic area. Rather than redefining the urban fabric, it looks back at the historic street layout and restores the grain of the area.
The scheme resolves challenging site geometries, and integrates multiple complex and distinct typologies. The building was envisioned as a powerhouse: various components playing a key part to the success of the machine. I was keen to unhide these systems and show what enables modern life to exist as we are accustomed to.

This thesis project was an opportunity to explore the relationship between designers and infrastructure; buildings and systems; and, innovators and their audiences.
